Government Commended for Facilitating Evacuation of Stranded Europe-Based Ghanaians
The Ghanaian Community in Germany has extended sincere thanks to the government of Ghana for facilitating the evacuation of stranded Ghanaians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 1,705 Europe-based Ghanaians safely returned to their respective countries, while 85 stranded individuals in Germany were brought back to Ghana.
In a statement signed by Benjamin Okrah on behalf of the community’s leadership, the community commended President Akufo-Addo for his leadership and compassion during this challenging time. The statement highlighted the President’s efforts in managing the pandemic and ensuring the safety of citizens.
Special acknowledgment was also given to Ghana’s Ambassador to Germany, Gina Blay, for her pivotal role in the evacuation. The statement praised her and her team for facilitating the process not only for Ghanaians in Germany but also for others across Europe.
Additionally, the community recognized the contributions of key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Aviation, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, German and Italian Embassies in Accra, the British High Commission, and the Diaspora Unit at the Presidency, for their instrumental roles in the successful evacuation.
However, the group noted that over 1,500 Ghanaians are still stranded in Ghana and appealed to the government to assist in their return to Europe. They expressed hope that a second phase of evacuations could be initiated by the end of August 2020.
